The University Experience Survey (UES) Consortium consists of the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), the Centre for Study of Higher Education (CSHE) and the University of Western Sydney (UWS), and is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE). The UES has been developed by the Australian government to provide a new national platform for measuring the quality of teaching and learning in Australian higher education. The UES focuses on aspects of the student experience that are measurable, linked with learning and development outcomes, and for which universities can reasonably be assumed to have responsibility. The survey yields results that are related to outcomes across differing institutional contexts, disciplinary contexts and modes of study. The UES provides new cross-institutional benchmarks that can aid quality assurance and improvement. This UES 2012 national report prepared by the consortium looks at reporting contexts, providing an overview of institutional and national reporting, and a more detailed analysis of high-level national results. It discusses the design, development, delivery and validation of the survey instrument. It goes on to review the implementation of the 2012 data collection and consider implications and broader research developments produced through the work. Further resources and information are provided in a series of appendices. Recommendations are made throughout this report. These highlight key areas for action but do not capture all areas in need of further development.

In 2011, the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) commissioned a Consortium led by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and including the University of Melbourne's Centre for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE) and the Griffith Institute for Higher Education (GIHE) to develop an instrument and methodology for a new national survey of the experience of university students - the University Experience Survey (UES). The UES is one of a number of initiatives being developed by the Australian Government to help ensure the ongoing improvement in the quality of teaching and learning in Australian universities. Government policy changes in November 2011 discontinued earlier plans for performance-based funding for teaching and learning. This prompted investigation of potential uses for UES data. While the nationally developed UES may have the potential to be used for a range of reasons, further instrument development would be required to ensure that the UES collects valid data and delivers relevant results. This report provides an overview of the development of the UES that took place in 2011. It includes information on the development and validation of the University Experience Questionnaire (UEQ), survey methodology and reporting and incorporates recommendations for future administrations that were formed by the UES Consortium after extensive consultation with the sector and findings from the pilot administration. The report does not provide technical advice on how UES data might be analysed statistically and reported.

The Student Experience Survey (SES) provides a national architecture for collecting feedback on key facets of the higher education student experience and, in doing so, obtain important data on the experience of current, on-shore commencing and later-year undergraduate and from 2017, postgraduate coursework students. The SES measures five aspects of the student experience: Skills Development, Learner Engagement, Teaching Quality, Student Support, and Learning Resources. Originally developed as the University Experience Survey (UES) in 2011, the SES was renamed in 2015 to facilitate the inclusion of students from non-university higher education institutions (NUHEIs). All 41 Australian universities participated in the 2017 SES, as well as 58 NUHEIs, a total of 99 institutions compared with 95 institutions in 2016 and 79 in 2015. This report presents an overview of the 2017 SES and is supplemented by data tables, an infographic and a methodological report.

The Student Experience Survey (SES), originally the University Experience Survey (UES), was created to provide a national framework for collecting feedback on the higher education student experience and, in doing so, obtain important data on the levels of engagement and satisfaction of current, on-shore commencing and later-year undergraduate students. The SES focuses on aspects of the student experience that are measurable, linked with learning and development outcomes, and potentially able to be influenced by institutions. The SES measures five aspects of the student experience: skills development, learner engagement, teaching quality, student support, and learning resources. The SES also contains demographic and contextual items to facilitate data analysis and reporting, and two open-response items that allow students to provide textual feedback on the best aspects of their higher education experience and those most in need of improvement. All 40 Australian universities participated in the 2015 SES but unlike previous years, 39 non-university higher education institutions (NUHEIs) also elected to participate in the survey.

The five aspects of student experience or focus areas in the SES comprise related items representing feedback from students about their higher education experience regarding outcomes, behaviours and satisfaction. Detailed information on how the scores are calculated can be found in Appendix 3: Production of scores. Originally developed as the University Experience Survey (UES) in 2011, the SES was renamed in 2015 to facilitate the inclusion of students from non-university higher education institutions (NUHEIs). The scope of the survey was limited to undergraduate students only but in 2017 postgraduate coursework students were included for the first time. Prior to 2020, other than minor changes in wording to ensure the survey instrument was relevant to all higher education students, the survey questionnaire had remained essentially unchanged from the 2014 Student Experience Survey. In 2020, a new international student module was added to measure broader aspects of the international student experience including living and accommodation experience and reasons for choosing to study in Australia. In 2021, a set of items measuring students' perceptions of freedom of expression on campus was included for the first time.
